Our research

Bringing the best team together for our children

We bring together a team of top researchers to investigate creative, bold and collaborative science to support our tamariki to lead healthy and successful lives.

The Challenge has three key research themes: Healthy Weight, Resilient Teens and Successful Learning, with two enabling research themes, Big Data and Vision Mātauranga that work across A Better Start Challenge.

Research themes

Healthy Weight

The Healthy Weight team takes a multi-pronged approach to achieve our goal for all New Zealand children to have a healthy weight.

Resilient Teens

The Resilient Teens team work with Māori and Pacific students, schools and communities to co-design a digital platform to provide easier access to evidence-based help and advice to maintain good mental health.

Successful Literacy and Learning

The Successful Literacy and Learning team aims to ensure children reach their learning and literacy milestones.

Big Data

The Big Data team works across the Challenge’s health, wellbeing and learning themes to answer important research questions.

Vision Mātauranga and He Awa Whiria

Vision Mātauranga is a framework that guides work to ensure the potential of Māori knowledge, resources and people is realised – to help New Zealanders create a better future. He Awa Whiria (braided rivers) is the model the Challenge applies to braid theories of knowledge in mutually inclusive ways to progress the wellbeing of tamariki.
