Ka Ora, Ka Ako: What is the evidence that healthy school lunches are worth investing in?

Hear the evidence of the effectiveness of free healthy school lunches from the expert themselves!

The bigger picture evidence. Dr Kelly Garton will give an overview of the evidence collected so far on the outcomes of Ka Ora, Ka Ako. She will then connect these short-term findings to the broader evidence base on free school lunch programmes found in the international literature.

Dr. Garton is a Research Fellow at the University of Auckland’s School of Population Health. Her research focuses on policy solutions for healthier food environments.

Dr Pippa McKelvie-Sebileau will discuss the impact of hunger on school achievement, presenting the findings from large-scale international assessments that show high levels of hunger for students in Aotearoa New Zealand and an associated lag in achievement.

Dr McKelvie-Sebileau is a founding member of the Nourishing Hawke’s Bay: He wairua tō te kai research team. Her doctorate completed in 2023 in Public Health at the University of Auckland looks at ways to improve nutrition for children in regional New Zealand, specifically investigating the impact of the introduction of school lunches in Hawke’s Bay schools. She is a Research Fellow with the Te Kura i Awarua Research Centre at Eastern Institute of Technology, Napier.

Professor Boyd Swinburn’s presentation is titled; What are the effectiveness, economy, efficiency, equity, and cost-effectiveness credentials of Ka Ora, Ka Ako? His talk will include evidence presented across 21 criteria derived from the outcomes that the community and government agencies expect and value from the programme.

Boyd is Professor of Population Nutrition and Global Health at the University of Auckland, Research Professor at EIT/Te Pukenga, and co-chair of Health Coalition Aotearoa. His research focuses on food policies and food systems for health, equity, and sustainability.
