Don’t miss out on this upcoming webinar reporting the latest research results on screen time across the preschool years.

Dr. Megan Gath from the University of Canterbury’s Child Well-being Research Institute will present data from a recently published research report, funded through the Ministry of Social Development’s Children and Families Research Fund.

Data from over 6,000 New Zealand children and their families collected through the Growing Up in New Zealand study will be shared. The data suggest that high levels of screen time across the preschool years are associated with poorer developmental outcomes when children reach school age, including language, early educational skills, and social skills. These research findings will be discussed within the current context of increasing levels of screen media use by young children.

Co-hosts for the webinar will be Jen Smith (Ngāti Whātua, Ngāpuhi) UC Senior Lecturer in Māori Education and Dr Susie Stevens UC Senior Lecturer, Child Well-being Research Institute and School of Teacher Education.

Panel discussants will provide commentary on the data and further insights related to children’s language development in the early years and impacts of screen time:

Professor Brigid McNeill University of Canterbury’s School of Teacher Education and Successful Learning Theme Leader for the A Better Start National Science Challenge

Tufulasi Taleni Senior Lecturer, University of Canterbury’s School of Teacher Education and researcher within the A Better Start National Science Challenge

Questions can be posed during the webinar for the presenters.
